Growing up in California meant being privy to the secret menu of one of the best burger franchises around. Period. I’ve heard friends from the south try to convince me Whataburger is comparable, and even friends in New York (of which I currently reside) tell me that Shake Shake is better! I have tried all three and I am here to tell you that In-N-Out is truly “what a hamburger is all about”.
Upon ordering in or driving through you noticed a very basic menu. I am talking three burger options, fries, perhaps five drink choices, and three shake flavors…and that is it. Or so one thinks! For those familiar, you are privy to the knowledge that there is a secret menu and pride yourself on showing this off to first-timers. But let’s be real…while their basic burger is consistent and delicious all the better options lie behind the visual menu. Common favorites are of course ordering your burger or fries “animal style” (topped with melted cheese, spread, and grilled onions), ordering a “neapolitan shake” (all three flavors mixed together), adding pickles to your burger (not part of their general toppings), ordering your burger “protein style” (for those who want to opt the bun out for a lettuce wrap), and even a “grilled cheese” for the vegetarian and kid friendly option. And beyond this there are still a handful more ways in which to order your drinks, fries, and stack your burger. This is all easy to learn and well, not so secret. But delicious…absolutely!
However, here is the thing that after probably about 20 years of knowledge I just learned existed for the first time today. MONKEY STYLE friends, yes…monkey style. This is no joke…it is possibly my dream come true (I just wasn’t aware of it). It is having your burger topped with not just animal style, but animal style fries! WHAT?! I need to get my butt back to California ASAP to try this.
Check out the Huffington Post article that just alerted me to such gloriousness. And where might you find this deliciousness in a bun? California of course, but also Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and Utah.
Somebody please try this and let me know how it is!
Enjoy!

P.S. I am also listing this under EXPLORE, because I have often thought designing a road trip solely based on hitting various In-N-Out locations along the west coast would be a brilliant idea.
